Problem Definition Methods

If the problem you are trying to solve is not fully defined it can be helpful to first dive deeper into the problem definition before trying to generate solution ideas. In this article I will present some common techniques used to faciliate this process.

The 5 Why’s

The 5 Why’s idea is to ask 5 times why a certain situation evolved to get to the root cause of a specific problem.

Ishikawa Diagram

The Ishikawa diagram also tries to get to the root cause of the problem. This is done by first identifying the most important factors that could be involved, this could be facilitated by the McKinsey 7S Model or The 4 Ps of Marketing. In the next step you need then to identify possible causes for problems that belong to the different factors.
